In a meeting on Friday, the Leeds City Council Executive Board will discuss the options for what to do with the Engine House, a part of the Tower Works development site.
The site achieved its 100% let milestone last summer, and is ready and waiting for further development. Planning permission has been secured for 138 residential units, 12,000 sq ft of commercial office development and 1,400 sq ft of retail and commercial space.
The council is focussing heavily on the area south of the river, with multiple large-scale projects either underway or in the planning phase. With an eye on the possibility of Leeds gaining the accolade of European Capital of Culture in 2023, the regeneration of Holbeck Urban Village will be crucial for a successful bid.
Holbeck Viaduct may well benefit from the renewed interest in the area. There are plans to bring the 145-year old relic of Leeds’ industrial past back into use as a walkway, featuring flower beds, lighting and art. If funds can be secured, it could be ready to open next year.
With work on the southern entrance to the train station opening up all sorts of possibilities for the Holbeck area, the next few years should be very interesting!
