The organisers of the Leeds Indie Food celebration have started a crowdfunding campaign to raise £6,750 for what is hoped will be Leeds’ first ever city-wide festival in May 2015, with the aim of celebrating the best of the city’s indie food and drink scene.
It was felt by some smaller indie eateries that the annual Leeds Loves Food Festival does not sufficiently showcase the wide range of high quality independent establishments in the city. So they came up with the idea having their own indie festival to give them the kind of exposure they can’t otherwise get.
The plan is for a two week long festival featuring collaborative events, including workshops, tasting menus, food trails, and film screenings across dozens of different venues. So far, around 20 independents have signed up to host events. The crowdfunding will make it possible for independent businesses to participate for free, with operating costs, advertising and design work already payed for.
Matt Dix, one of the organisers of Leeds Indie Food, said, “I think people are beginning to see Leeds as a real centre for independent food and drink to rival Liverpool, Manchester and even London and we think it’s the perfect time to celebrate that.”
